'Hommage para Luiz' is a musical tribute to the classic film Orfeu Negro (Black Orpheus) from 1959.
Despite receiving clear guidelines from the commissioning party, I consciously sought to incorporate elements of my own musical voice.
Regardless of the stylistic framework, writing for a classical orchestra is always a great joy for me. Each project feels like a new journey of discovery—exploring the world of tonal colors, dynamic balance, and orchestral techniques.
The story:
Orpheus is the greatest singer and musician in Greek mythology. His music can move people, animals, and even stones.Orpheus loves Eurydice, a beautiful nymph whom he marries. But shortly after their wedding, Eurydice is bitten by a poisonous snake and dies while fleeing from her love-hungry pursuer, Aristaeus.
Overwhelmed by grief (Dolor), Orpheus decides to descend (Descendos) into the Underworld (Ad Inferos)—a dangerous journey that only a few dare to undertake. The path to the Underworld, across the Lacus Avernus, is shown to him by Pan, the god of nature, forests, and music.
With his music, Orpheus manages to touch the hearts of Charon, the ferryman who carries the dead across the river Styx; the Furies (Furiae), vengeful goddesses of the Underworld; and even Hades and Persephone, the rulers of the Underworld.
Hades allows Orpheus to bring Eurydice back to the surface—on one condition: he must not look back at her until they are both fully returned to the world of the living.
So the two begin their ascent (Aescendos)—full of hope, but also fear. Just before they reach the light of the living world, Orpheus cannot resist the temptation and turns around.Eurydice vanishes—frustra (in vain) was all his effort.
